Welcome to bad bvssy, your local forum on art, music, and film — curated for bad tastemakers, pseudo-spiritual sluts, and chronic doom-scrollers.

bad bvssy is a sporadically-released newsletter written by myself, Laya Lee. I’m an artist, a filmmaker, and an arts and culture writer based in Chicago. Here you’ll find articles on media and culture and short essays that probably should’ve stayed in my tumblr drafts.

bad bvssy is comprised of the following:

  • the bad bvssy digest: a culture roundup of art, new releases, and/or pieces of news/culture that have been taking up a lot of space in my brain.

  • film & music reviews of new releases – often written and evaluated through a postcolonial and trans lens. If it’s sexy, fun, silly, or even a lil bit gay, you’ll probably find it here.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

"'Sex and the City'" meets Susan Sontag but if she were Filipina-American, Transgender, and exploring the possibility of a future in comedy."

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Laya Lee (she/they) is an arts & culture writer and a filmmaker, but she also identifies as a sort of reticent internet poltergeist, an overly thoughtful meme queen, and an enthusiast of trees, dogs, and birds. She is the daughter to a Filipina woman from the provinces of Mindanao (Subanen land) and a southern White American man from the bayou of Louisiana (Caddo land). She was born and raised on unceded indigenous land of the Anishinaabe collective, home to many tribes, including the Ojibwe, Odawa, Potawatomi, and more, also known as Chicago, USA.

Since childhood, Laya has found unique ways of tucking herself away into quiet, tidy boxes and now spends much of her later years crawling her way out. She has since traded a life of quietude for a dedicated mission of pursuing boldness and honesty through art and storytelling. She wields comedy, criticism, video-making, and yapping as tools in her own humble efforts to cultivate joy and connection with others.

Laya holds a BFA in Studio Art from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and has shared a variety of visual & video-based work in program screenings and group exhibitions in Chicago and Berlin. Currently, her favorite hobbies consist of organizing her hundreds of internet tabs, overthinking her social media presence, and considering quitting art to break into esports, just to make gamer dudebros angry.
